Annexes

The core of the IETS activities is carried out in so called Annexes. Each Annex has a defined work program and its own Annex Manager. Interest in involvement and participation in the activtities within the Annexes should be expressed to the Annex Managers directly. Please find contact details in the articles presenting each Annex.

New Annexes can be proposed to the IETS Executive Committee (ExCo). Contact the IETS secretariat or ExCo chair for more detailed instructions.

Membrane Processes in Biorefineries

Within the concept of biorefineries membrane processes have been identified as a key separation technology due to their high selectivity and low energy consumption. While the design and operation of membrane processes in other industrial sectors, e.g. the dairy industry, is well established, the design, integration and operation of membrane processes in biorefineries is largely empirical. Energy Efficiency in SMEs

Much attention, both research and policy-wise, has been raised towards energy-intensive industries, while non-energy-intensive and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have received less despite the larger relative energy efficiency potential spotted compared to the energy-intensive sector. There is a great need to conduct research and development on non-energy-intensive and SME industry, in particular on design and adoption of energy policies and implementation of energy efficiency studies. Industry-based Biorefineries

Annex XI has a multi-disciplinary approach to the concept of biorefineries integrated in industrial complexes, aiming at the optimization of energy efficiency in global terms. The approach is based on industry needs and application, combining the knowledge of industrial technologies with energy efficiency and biomass conversion processes. Different industrial sectors are considered, including the integration of bio with oil refineries, together with CCS options yielding hydrocarbons/hydrogen, looking into technology and systems aspects for a better use of energy.
