Final Reports: Industry-based Biorefineries towards Sustainability
The purpose of Task XI – Industry-based Biorefineries towards Sustainability was to support the design, assessment and deployment of sustainable industrial biorefineries by combining technology pathways, decision-support methodologies and system-level integration concepts. Specifically, Task XI aimed to:
- Identify and structure technology pathways toward net-zero and negative-emission biorefineries.
- Advance decision-support systems (DSS) and ex-ante analytical frameworks capable of managing the complexity, uncertainty and multidimensional trade-offs of biorefinery investments.
- Develop circular bioeconomy and industrial symbiosis concepts, positioning biorefineries as hubs for carbon, energy, water and material loops.
- Foster international collaboration between academia, industry and policy communities to accelerate learning, harmonize methodologies and reduce implementation risks.
These objectives were addressed through three tightly interlinked subtasks covering analytical tools (Subtask 1), net-zero emissions technology pathways (Subtask 2) and circular
bioeconomy (Subtask 3). The Final Reports together with an Executive Summary from these three Subtasks are now available.
