Topic Sheet: Aligning Policy, Deployment and Sustainability for Industrial Biorefineries
Topic Sheet no 24, September 2026, based on the proposal for Subtask 4 in Task XI – Industry-based Biorefineries towards Sustainability, approved in May 2026. Click for download
Industrial biorefineries are increasingly recognised as a critical component of the transition towards a lowcarbon and circular economy. By converting biomass into fuels, chemicals, materials, and energy, they offer the potential to decarbonise multiple industrial sectors simultaneously.
Within the IETS TCP, work is done to explore and clarify how coherent policy design, combined with robust sustainability frameworks, can enable
the accelerated deployment of industrial biorefineries at scale.
The focus is on multifunctional biorefineries, producing a portfolio of products (fuels, chemicals, materials, and energy) and integrated
into existing industrial systems.
