Executive Summary
This Task has investigated industrial excess heat since 2008. After Subtasks 1, 2 and 3 (completed in 2015, 2018 and 2021 respectively), Subtask 4 ran from January 2024 to December 2025 with the aim of integrating waste-heat recovery into a wider, system-level perspective covering process integration, industrial symbiosis and structured knowledge transfer. The Subtask was carried out by a consortium of twelve countries: Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. About 50 national projects were mapped to three thematic activities and used as the empirical basis for the synthesis.
Subtask 4 was structured around three activities:
- Activity 1 – The Role of Waste Heat in Industry and Industrial Symbiosis.
- Activity 2 – Strategic Process Integration / Intensification for Future Changes in Industrial
Energy Systems. - Activity 3 – Ongoing Projects at Various TRL Levels and Systematic Knowledge Transfer
