Much attention, both research and policy-wise, has been raised towards energy-intensive industries, while non-energy-intensive and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have received less despite the larger relative energy efficiency potential spotted compared to the energy-intensive sector. There is a great need to conduct research and development on non-energy-intensive and SME industry, in particular on design and adoption of energy policies and implementation of energy efficiency studies. This Task on energy efficiency in the steel industry is a continuation and a broadened approach on working on energy efficiency in the steel industry. It will focus on applied studies for resource efficiency, training and dissemination and method development. Read more »

The objective of this Annex has been to reduce energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases through greater use of heat pumps in industry. The Annex started on 01 April 2010 and expired on 30 April 2014 with 15 participating organisations from Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany (Operating Agent) Japan, The Netherlands, South Korea and Sweden. Separation processes such as distillation, evaporation and drying, are used in the production of all kind of different products and the energy use in this sector constitutes a major part of the total industrial energy use. The activity in Annex X has focused on knowledge transfer and deployment of information between the members of the IETS countries. Read more »

Separation systems can represent 40-70 % of both capital and operating costs in industry. They also account for 45 % of all the process energy used by the chemical and petroleum refining industries every year.
